The processed food industry is an important sector for Malaysia’s economic growth and food stability. Collectively the industry encompasses sectors such as processed seafood products and meats, dairy products, cocoa preparations and chocolates, tea, coffee and other beverages, cereals and flour preparations, processed fruits and vegetables, confectionery and sugar items, margarine and shortenings, herbs, spices and sauces and much more. The largest export category is edible products and preparations consisting of sauces, soya-based preparations (starches and powders), and extracts and concentrates that are used as food ingredients in the manufacture of food. Major export destinations for edible products and preparations are Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, China and Singapore. The second largest contributor in the export of processed food is cocoa and cocoa preparations. Malaysia is among the top producer of processed cocoa in the world, and its manufacturers produce chocolate products for export to over 60 countries, including the USA, China, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore.
